This process is repeated for each of the colours needed. If I want to get rid of the selections and return the canvas to normal, I can simply use the cursor to click outside and the ‘marching ants’ will disappear. Through this, it is impossible to go outside the selected areas. Once the area is captured, it should be surrounded by ‘marching ants’. I would go back to the flat colour layer, and fill in the colours with the pen tool. If the expansion is too large, the then the capture area will leech outside of the line art and affect other colours. If the expansion is too small, then not all of the area will be captured. I always expand the areas so that I can fill in any gaps between the line art and the colours. To do this, I would use the magic wand tool on the line art layer, select specific areas and then expand the area(s) by 2 pixels. Between them, I would create another new layer for the flat colours, and I would carefully fill in the colours. Hide the layer of drawing, to produce learn line artįLAT COLOURS – Thirdly, when the line art is done, I would hide the drawing underneath and lock both of them. Once it is done, I would hide the rough drawing from view, to see the line art stand alone. This way, the line art should look more accurate than choppy. If it is difficult to draw the line, then I may zoom in by 300% to focus more. Sometimes I’m not pleased with the result, so I’ll undo and start again. Personally, I often rotate the canvas to tilt it to one side, so that it is easier to draw lines more smoothly. (Paint brush set values: min size of 80%, density of 100%, fine round 1and density of 100%, color blending of 100% & persistence of 80%.) Especially as they are two different colours. Making the layer with the original drawing lighter, will make it easier to ink, as the two layers won’t be confused with each other. Then I would turn down the opacity to 30% of the original drawing, and work over the drawing and use the paint brush to form the lines. LINE ART – Secondly, I would create a new layer for the line art and the lock the layer below, to prevent the line art from blending with the drawing. (Marker brush set values: min size of 95%, density of 100%, coloring blending of 100% & persistence of 80%) I’ll use colour instead black, to make the ‘ghosting’ process easier later on. I would draw the character roughly in the centre with the marker brush. Tools required – Paint Tool SAI & Drawing Tablet (Optional)ĭifficulty – 2/5 in hardness (Requires basic understanding of how functions work briefly)ĭRAWING – Firstly I would open Paint Tool SAI, and open a new canvas around 1000 by 1000 pixels at 300 DPI. This is a tutorial of how I create fan art of the Pokemon – Whimsicott, on the computer in Paint Tool SAI:
